P&A Leadership Summit Returns to Las Vegas Aug. 30

LAS VEGAS — Organizers of P&A Leadership Summit announced that the fourth annual event will be held Aug. 30–31, 2016, at Paris Las Vegas. PALS is the industry’s only event designed for executives working in the F&I product provider and administrator segment.

Describing last year’s conference as “an event to remember,” show chair David Gesualdo said organizers will build on that momentum in 2016.

“We have a lot of positive energy on our side as we enter the early stages of planning the event, convening an advisory board and building the agenda,” said Gesualdo, who also serves as publisher of F&I and Showroom and P&A magazines. “That work has already begun and we will continue working through the summer.”

This year’s agenda will include educational sessions organized into four categories: Product, Actuary, Technology and Operations. As in years past, the two-day schedule will also include keynote addresses and networking opportunities.

Registration for the event is expected to open soon. For updates and industry news, attendees are encouraged to subscribe to P&A’s free enewsletter.

PALS Panel on Self-Governance Draws Interest

LAS VEGAS — Organizers of the annual P&A Leadership Summit have announced that “Govern or Be Governed,” a compliance-themed panel staffed by leading executives from the F&I product providers segment, is drawing marked interest among attendees. The event will be held Sept. 9–10 at Paris Las Vegas.

“It’s clear [the topic] has struck a nerve in the industry, where compliance in general and the machinations of the CFPB in particular weigh heavily on the minds of dealers and the directors of the companies that serve them,” said David Gesualdo, show chair and publisher of F&I and Showroom and P&A magazines. “The fact that many of the leading minds in the F&I products segment were willing to take on this topic is undoubtedly among the main reasons the panel is generating a high level of intrigue throughout the industry.”

The panel is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, Sept. 9, at 2 p.m. Moderator Tim Meenan, an attorney and managing partner of Meenan PA, will be joined by Steve Amos, president of GSFSGroup; David DeCredico, senior vice president of business development for EasyCare; Doug Frey, Allstate Dealer Services’ executive vice president and COO; Mark Macek, president of United States Warranty Corp.; and Kelly Price, president of National Automotive Experts.

Among other topics, the panel is expected to speculate on what form guidance from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau in the F&I products arena might take, including price or markup controls; whether product providers can stave off new regulations by preemptively imposing their own rules; and how providers, agents and dealers can work together to ensure that their interests, as well as those of car buyers, can be protected in such a scenario.

Registration for the P&A Leadership Summit is now open. More information, including the full agenda, speakers and hotel room block is available at the event’s website. LAS VEGAS – Organizers of the 2015 P&A Leadership Summit have announced that Mark Anderson, owner of LWACOR, has agreed to speak at the event, which will be held Sept. 9–10 at Paris Las Vegas. His presentation is expected to shed light on recent decisions and proposed regulations by the U.S. Tax Court and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

“In the magazines and at our conferences, we rely on experts to read between the headlines and deliver the information we need to get on with our work,” said David Gesualdo, show chair and publisher of F&I and Showroom and P&A magazines. “Mark Anderson has promised to do exactly that, and we look forward to welcoming him to the PALS stage.”

Anderson’s presentation, “Implications to Producer- and Dealership-Retained Risk Programs From Recent Tax Court Decisions and IRS Rulings and Regulations,” will include analysis of and commentary on two Tax Court decisions, Rent-A-Center v. Commissioner and Securitas Holdings v. Commissioner, which should now be considered in the structuring of risk programs.

He will also discuss the implications of proposed IRS regulations regarding the tax treatment of series limited liability companies (LLCs) and cell companies, which would treat the individual series or cells as separate entities for tax purposes, as well as the impact of several recent Technical Advice Memorandums and Private Letter Rulings on producer programs.

Reed, Burgiss to Bring ‘Power of Digital F&I’ to PALS

LAS VEGAS – Organizers of the annual P&A Leadership Summit have announced that Brian Reed, president and CEO of F&I Express, and Mike Burgiss, founder and vice president of MakeMyDeal, a Cox Automotive company, have agreed to speak at the 2015 event, which will be held Sept. 9–10 at Paris Las Vegas.

Their session, “The Power of Digital F&I: What it means for F&I Administrators,” will focus on the research and benefits of online F&I shopping processes and offer different perspectives on what needs to happen within the industry to move F&I product information upfront in the online shopping process — now and into the future.

“We are excited to offer our attendees the insight that this powerful duo has to offer administrators,” said David Gesualdo, show chair and publisher of F&I and Showroom and P&A magazines. “Their knowledge of digital F&I processes will make for a valuable takeaway to all who attend.”

Burgiss specializes in leading innovations that drive new business growth. His 17 years of experience leading ecommerce and innovation has resulted in 13 awarded patents for consumer technology products. “Consumers use technology in almost every part of their lives,” said Burgiss. “This has raised their expectations for just about everything, including how they shop for F&I products.”

“Providing product and price information online along with associated product content will improve the customer’s understanding of F&I products prior to entering the dealership, and ultimately improve F&I closing rates,” said Reed, adding that he leads the F&I Express team in its quest to provide world-class technology to support electronic processing and ecommerce.

Registration is now open for the P&A Leadership Summit. Attendees who register by Aug. 7 will enjoy a $100 early-bird discount. Private Equity Principal Behind NAC, FFDS Deals to Speak at PALS

LAS VEGAS — Organizers of the annual P&A Leadership Summit have announced that Jorge Gross, principal of Trivest Partners, the private equity firm that purchased National Auto Care (NAC) and Family First Dealer Services (FFDS), has agreed to speak at the 2015 event, which will be held Sept. 9–10 at Paris Las Vegas.

Trivest Partners made headlines in 2013 when it acquired NAC and FFDS; the companies merged in September of that year.

“I look forward to attending the P&A Leadership Summit and discussing the acquisitions and merger of National Auto Care and Family First Dealer Services, which have proven to be a tremendous investment for Trivest Partners,” Gross said. “I will touch on valuation, the variables we looked for, the aspects we liked and perhaps a few items I wish I had known before we completed the transactions. I will also speak to the process and effort of combining the two businesses.”

Gross joined Trivest Partners in 2006, after a successful tenure at Credit Suisse Boston. He has since been involved in over 20 transactions with an aggregate value of more than $600 million. Gross currently serves on the board of directors for NAC as well as GetixHealth and Northfield Industries.

“This is a rare opportunity to hear the inside story of a blockbuster deal in the P&A segment,” said David Gesualdo, show chair and publisher of F&I and Showroom and P&A magazines. “Jorge Gross will undoubtedly have the rapt attention of every audience member.”

Harkins Returns as PALS Emcee

LAS VEGAS — Organizers of the annual P&A Leadership Summit have announced that Robert Harkins will once again serve as master of ceremonies for the 2015 event, which is scheduled for Sept. 9–10 at Paris Las Vegas.

“Bob Harkins is a man of many talents, but his energy and genuine affection for our industry make him the ideal ringmaster for our event,” said David Gesualdo, show chair and publisher of F&I and Showroom and P&A magazines. “We are delighted to have him back.”

Harkins will host PALS for the third consecutive year, the most recent of several such appearances, including Agent Summit in March and April’s Midwest Compliance Summit. “I am honored to serve as your P&A Leadership Summit emcee for the third straight year,” Harkins said. “Recent actions at the legislative and judicial branches have pushed our industry to the tipping point. Events like PALS give voice to the concerns and solutions unique to the P&A segment.”

NADA’s Koblenz Joins Industry Summit Roster

LAS VEGAS — Organizers of the annual P&A Leadership Summit have announced that Andy Koblenz, executive vice president of legal and regulatory affairs for the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA), will deliver a keynote address at Industry Summit 2015, which will be held Sept. 8–10 at Paris Las Vegas. Attendees who register for the P&A Leadership Summit are invited to attend.

“Andy Koblenz is a familiar face at Industry Summit and a great friend to dealers everywhere,” said David Gesualdo, show chair and publisher of F&I and Showroom and P&A magazines. “His experience speaks for itself, and we anticipate a gripping and informative address.”

Since 2006, Koblenz has spearheaded critical efforts to protect franchised new-car dealers from federal regulatory overreach. He represents dealers before all federal regulatory agencies and is at the forefront of NADA’s advocacy efforts to protect consumer choice in indirect auto financing. Along with the nation’s top dealer groups, he helped launch NADA’s optional Fair Credit Compliance Policy and Program, which helps dealers and lenders comply with fair credit rules while preserving robust competition for car buyers in the auto finance marketplace.

“The upcoming Industry Summit will provide an ideal forum to discuss a resolution of the challenges to the indirect vehicle financing model presented by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau,” Koblenz said. “As a matter of principle, car buyers have the right to negotiate the rate on auto loans. And they have the right to seek a better deal. No government institution should deny that. That’s not what Washington is supposed to do.”

Koblenz directs a staff of six attorneys specializing in franchise and state law, corporate law and federal regulatory affairs. He helped navigate NADA through intensely challenging times, including the credit crisis, automaker bankruptcies and Great Recession. Previously, he served as NADA’s vice president of industry affairs.

More information about Industry Summit and P&A Leadership Summit is available at the events’ websites. Attendees who register by Aug. 7 will enjoy a $100 early-bird discount.
